Dual Citizenship
Following the introduction of Dual Citizenship under the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment No. 2 of 2016), please be advised as follows:
I. Notice of Acquisition of Citizenship
Under Article 39(1) “A citizen shall not lose citizenship by acquiring citizenship of another country.”
Such persons will be required to notify the Board of acquisition of that other citizenship by completing and submitting Notice of Acquisition of Citizenship of Another Country Form (Form VI) in accordance with Section 9(1) of Statutory Instrument No. 50 of 2017.
For applicants aged 16 years and above; submit copies of the following documents:
- National Registration Card
- Bio-data page of Zambian Passport
- Bio-data page of current Foreign Passport
For applicants aged below 16 years; submit copies of the documents listed below:
- Birth Certificate
- Bio-data page of Zambian Passport (if available)
- Bio-data page of Foreign Passport
- Father / Mother’s National Registration Card
- Father / Mother’s Zambian Passport
II. Bestowal of Citizenship:
Under Article 39(2) “A citizen who ceased to be a citizen before the commencement of this Constitution as a result of acquiring the citizenship of another country shall be entitled to apply as prescribed to the Citizenship Board of Zambia for Citizenship and the Citizenship Board of Zambia shall bestow citizenship on that person.
For persons who wish to bestow their Zambian Citizenship, the procedure is as follows:
- Complete Bestowal of Citizenship applications forms (Form VII) (only available at the Embassy)
- Pay prescribed processing fee of Three hundred Zambian Kwacha (K300) or its equivalent (at time of the in-person Consular Interview. Payment is by money order or Bank Certified Check only, made payable to the “Embassy of the Republic of Zambia.”
- Mission to forward duly completed form and the supporting documents listed below to Passport & Citizenship Office, Lusaka;
Supporting Documents for applicants aged 16 years and above:
- National Registration Card
- Zambian Passport (last held)
- Birth Certificate if available
- Current Foreign Passport
- Applicant’s parents’ National Registration Card if available
- Four Passport size pictures
- Finger prints from police
- Money Order or Bank Certified Check $30 payable to “Embassy of Zambia”
Supporting Documents for Minors / Also applicable to Children who were born outside Zambia; to Zambian Parents who were Zambian Citizens at the time of the minor applicants’ birth:
- Applicants’ Birth Certificate
- Applicants Zambian Passport (last held and if available)
- Applicants Current Foreign Passport
- Four (4) passport size pictures
- Finger prints from the police
- Applicants’ parents’ National Registration Card if available
- Applicants’ parents’ Zambian passport (last held)
- Money Order or Bank Certified Check $30 payable to “Embassy of Zambia”
- Upon Citizenship Board approval, letters of approval will be sent to the Mission
- Applicants will be required to complete an Oath of Allegiance and pay Five thousand kwacha (K5,000) or its equivalent for the Certificate of Bestowal;
- Oath of Allegiance and receipt of payment should be forwarded to Passport Office in Lusaka for the issuance of Certificate of Bestowal;
- Certificate of Bestowal will be forwarded to Mission for onward transmission to the applicants
Dual Citizenship – Application Process:

- In the body of the email, list the following details:
- Applicants name in full
- Date of Birth
- Contact information
- Telephone number
- Mailing address
- National Registration Card number
- Zambian Passport number
- State the basis of your claim to Zambian National Status
- By Birth
- By Decent
- State your acquired Citizenship
- State Date of acquisition of the Citizenship listed in (g) above
- Attachments:
- Zambian Passport
- National Registration Card (front and back)
- Valid Passport foreign passport
- All other case specific applicable aforementioned documents
Upon receipt of the email, the Consular Section will contact the applicant and advise.
NOTE: Dual Citizenship application requires an in-person Consular Interview.
