Zambia appeals for human capital infrastructure support for newly constructed universities.
Zambia’s Ambassador to the United States Palan Mulonda has appealed to the academic community in New Mexico to provide human capital and soft infrastructure to universities under construction in Zambia.
Ambassador Mulonda says there is need to explore for opportunities that will help the country upgrade targeted colleges into universities. He said faculty development is high on President Michael Chilufya Sata’s agenda of making university education more accessible in the country.
The Zambian envoy was speaking when a Zambian delegation called on the President of the University of New Mexico, Robert Frank in Albuquerque today.
Mr. Mulonda said the Zambian government had embarked on building infrastructure adding that there was need now for support from partners such as the University of New Mexico to help build human capital infrastructure.
“The newly constructed universities require staff development programs, scholarships, e-resources and faculty and student exchange programs.” Mr. Mulonda said.
And Lusaka City Deputy Mayor Potipher Tembo called for exchange programs with the University of New Mexico and the University of Zambia Great East Road Campus.
And University of New Mexico President, Dr Frank pledged his university’s support and called on all parties to follow through the general cooperation agreement soon to be concluded between the University of New Mexico and the University of Zambia.
The University of New Mexico and UNZA general cooperation agreement will provide a platform for collaboration between the two institutions in various disciplines. The agreement was initiated by a Zambian national based in Albuquerque, Mr. Patrick Mapalo.
The Zambian delegation that also included Lusaka City Councilor Mr. McBride Sekeleti and Lusaka City Council Attorney, Mr. Micheal Moono Mwape took a tour of the University main campus met with different faculties at the university including the schools of Architecture and Design Planning, Anthropology and Africana Studies, Health Sciences and the Anderson School of Management.
